Balearic Islands, Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca city guide

The most popular island of the Balearic Islands is Mallorca. Not only is it the capital of them all, but also the biggest and most diverse island of the Mediterranean. Most people know this place because of its beautiful beaches, summer adventures, and parties, but Mallorca is so much more than this. If you are planning to visit the island, we recommend you take a couple of days to explore the capital: Palma de Mallorca. Here you will find the history and essence of the island, and you will be able to deeply understand this place.

Palma de Mallorca is located southeast of the island and is the eighth-most populated city in Spain. This is the focus of the greatest places with history, culture, art, and so much more, without mentioning all the incredible Palma de Mallorca hotels and amazing restaurants that you can find in the area.

If you want to visit and relax, our recommendation is to avoid going in the summer or holidays, since you will end up swimming in a crowd of people everywhere you go. To truly admire the beauty of the place, plan your adventure when there are not many tourists going, and this will allow you to explore with ease and at your own pace.

What to see in Palma de Mallorca?

There are so many interesting places in Palma that you will probably need at least 2 days to see it all. The main historical center is called Palma Alta, where you will see some of the oldest buildings on the island. But you can also explore Lonja or Santa Catalina, which are a little bit far away but are a complete attraction.

Royal Palace of La Almudaina

If you are into the Spanish royal family, then you need to explore the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. This is located in front of the cathedral and it is currently the official Royal House for ceremonies, important events, and holidays in Mallorca. It was built in 1281 by a Muslim. Then, was the palace of the Majorcan kingdom in XIV, and later was the seat of the Aragón kingdom. It is a beautiful building with so much history and incredible architecture.

La Seu: the Cathedral of Palma

Along with the Royal Palace, we have the main cathedral of the island, the Cathedral of St. Mary of Palma, commonly known as La Seu. It is located in the heart of Palma and it is one of the most impressive buildings in all of Mallorca. It was built in the 14 century and it is characterized by its gothic style. Fun fact, this is the only gothic cathedral built on the shore. And if the outside leaves you speechless, then wait until you visit the inside. The main nave is the second biggest that exists among all European gothic cathedrals!

Parc de la Mar

Right there, just on the side of the Royal Palace and La Seu, we will find Parc de la Mar, or the Sea Park. When the highway was built, there was a large space between the new road and the old sea line. So, to fill the space, a salt lake of 9 hectares was built in 1970 as a way of honoring the old shore that used to touch the great wall. Now the lake touches the great wall again! It is a beautiful place with trees, green grass, and a playground for kids.

Bellver Castle

Another incredible attraction that you cannot miss is the Bellver Castle. It was built in 1300 at the top of a hill, and from here you can have the best panoramic views (and of course, the best pictures) of the island. This is the place where you want to go and wait for the sunset to drop, and believe it, you won’t regret it. It has an interesting round center guarded by 4 towers, and the architecture is absolutely mindblowing and beautiful.

La Lonja de Palma

La Lonja de Palma or Sa Llotja, is a great gothic-style building built in 1426. Since then it has been used for many purposes, and currently, it is a place where you can see art galleries and art expositions. Behind it, you will find the Consulado del Mar, the current seat of the Balear government. The main square and around you will find a cheerful environment where you can grab something to eat and drink, during the day or at night. This is a great place to relax, explore, chat with friends and feel the essence of Mallorca Island.

Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is also known as Es Jonquet or the Fishermen’s town. This was the place of old street markets and for years was left aside. It has suffered a renewal and now is a place where you can find many interesting boutique hotels, art galleries, and even courtyards of Palma’s stately homes, like Can Menor or Can Salas Burgues, which were one of the most expensive houses in Palma. Around you can find La Lonja, different squares, and great restaurants to spend the evening.

Courtyards of Palma’s stately homes

One of the most interesting attractions of Palma de Mallorca and a great part of Spain’s culture is the Stately homes. These were noble houses and in Mallorca, you could find around 600 of them. Now, there are 60 still standing and you can visit some of them. Their courtyard is wonderful, open with an entrance of light, peaceful, and calm. Some of them were taken to build hotels, restaurants, stores, and art galleries. Can Vivot, Can Menor, and Can Salas Burgues are some that you cannot miss.

These are just some of the great places that you can visit in Palma. As you can see, the island is not just beaches and coves, but also a place filled with rich culture, history, and art. If you are planning your visit or you are going soon to Mallorcan, you cannot miss these wonderful places on the island. More info about charter yachts in Palma de Mallorca.
